Moriarty Wins Listed Gosford Cup

10 Jan 2013

Last start Tattersalls Cup (LR) winner Moriarty made it two stakes wins in the first 10 days of the new year when he fought off the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival in Thursday's Listed $125,000 Gosford Cup (2100m). Sydney's leading jockey Hugh Bowman had Moriarty back in the field during the run but produced him with one sweeping run on the outside and his turn of foot powered him to victory.

The Herald Sun reported that; “Chris Waller will now look to the Brisbane winter carnival after his imported stayer proved his class with a gritty win in yesterday's Gosford Cup. Waller believes coming back in distance and being ridden off the speed could be the making of Moriarty - who has now won back-to-back stakes races. Coming back in distance and being ridden off the pace is allowing him to use his strong turn of foot at the end of his races. He was patient and allowed the early speed battle to unfold before finding the middle of the track and gunning down Gai Waterhouse's pair of Reuben Percival and Travolta, who filled the minor placings. With limited options for Moriarty in the immediate future at his preferred distance, Waller intends to give him a short spell before aiming towards the Hollindale Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in winter. His win in the Tattersalls Club Cup was pleasing and yesterday proved his class.”

It has been a good week for Clodovil with his progeny as Captain Kendall and Two In The Pink also registered victories, both at Kempton on Wednesday for David Evans and Hugo Palmer respectively.
