Deserved Success For Manderley

01 Jun 2014

Manderley ran out of her skin to finish fourth in last month's Qipco 1,000 Guineas, so it was no surprise to see her finally break her duck in humble company at Nottingham.

Richard Hannon's filly, who is owned by Julie Wood, made a bold bid from the front as a 100-1 chance for the Newmarket Classic before finishing a close fourth.

Sent off the 1-3 favourite under Richard Hughes for the Caribbean Party Night Saturday 5th July Maiden Fillies' Stakes, she beat Pat Shanahan's Irish raider Maid Of The Glens by half a length.

"When she got to the bushes (at Newmarket) she was still there and others were off the bridle, and to carry on for fourth was brilliant," Wood told Racing UK. "If you look at her last three runs she was improving all the time. We didn't enter in the early-closing races at Ascot as we didn't know what she was. We'll miss Ascot but we'll look at the calendar and place her. Hopefully she can go back up to black type level."
