Moriarty Victorious in Gr.2 Brisbane Cup

Stradbroke Handicap Day 2013 saw the improving Moriarty win the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm. The Clodovil five-year-old Moriarty proved too hard to beat in the last on the program. The imported stayer has been racing with Waller since the autumn last year and started to hit his peak in January when winning the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup and Gosford Cup in Sydney. Moriarty won the Lord Mayors Cup over the 2000m at Rosehill in May. “He’s been a bit of a revolution in the past six months,” Waller said after the Brisbane Cup win.

“This is a great win,” part-owner Neil Werrett, also one of the connections of the mighty Black Caviar, said. “And what a ride. Nash did a great job to get him across. He’s got a good speed to him that horse. He’s a pretty handy horse Moriarty.”

Waller was pleased with Moriarty’s performance and was especially happy that he handled the step up to the 2400m without issue opening up plenty of opportunities for the pending spring carnivals. Waller believes “it was 10 out of 10 ride, he burst through a tight gap and ran to the line strongly.”
