We Are adds to Bellarida tally

29 May 2014

The Bellarida family has been particularly active this spring as the source of Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes winner Zurigha, high class Hong Kong performer Dominant and Abernant Stakes runner up Es Que Love.

Now the family has thrown up a top class filly in George Strawbridge’s homebred We Are, who retained her unbeaten record for Freddy Head with a fluent success in Sunday’s Prix Saint Alary at Longchamp. Her win came two days after Roger Charlton’s Observational , another descendant of Bellarida, took the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood to book his spot in the Derby.

Bred in 1986 by Jacques Wertheimer, Bellarida was trained by Criquette Head-Maarek to win the 1989 Prix de Royaumont and Prix des Tuilieres. The daughter of Bellypha spent her early years at stud for the Wertheimers in Kentucky, where visits to Slew O’Gold and Trempolino resulted in the Listed winner Bayourida and Listed-placed Fumarelli. In 1997, she was sold at Tattersalls December Sale to Strawbridge through London Bloodstock Services for 85,000gns, a relatively inexpensive figure given her subsequent success. The Bering filly she was carrying at the time of her sales was Listed winner Bellona while in 2002 she foaled We Are’s dam In Clover, a daughter of Inchinor who carried Strawbridge’s colours to success in the 2005 Prix de Flore. We Are, is the fourth foal out of In Clover, who is also the dam of Listed winner Dream Clover (by Oasis Dream).

In Clover’s close relation Es Que, by Inchinor out of Bellona, has also clicked with the Hasili family to produce Dominant, last year’s Hong Kong Vase winner who is one of the best runner sired by Dansili’s brother Cacique. Another talented runner out of Es Que is Es Que Love (by Clodovil), an improved sprinter this Seaton for Clive Cox who is set to contest the King’s Stand. Es Que has an Invincible Spirit yearling colt and a Sea The Stars filly foal at foot. Es Que is in foal to Galileo this year. Es Que resides at Rathasker along with her half sister Aliosi (Kalanisi) who has a Kingsalsa yearling colt and a Clodovil colt foal at foot.

The family’s recent success doesn’t end there. Bellarida’s 1991 filly by Forty Niner, Forty Belles is the dam of Party, the 2006 Radley Stakes winner whose second foal is the Galileo colt Observerational, and Jummana, dam of last year’s French Group 3-placed juvenile Another Party. And then there is Noycelles, Bellarida’s unraced filly by Docksider. Bought for just €22,000 at Arqnana in 2007 by Alice Nugent, Noycelles has made a cracking start to her stud career as the dam of Group 3 winner Lily’s Angel, who ran second in last year’s Matron Stakes, and Listed winner Zurigha.
