Stylish Es Que Love Lands Lennox Stakes
30 Jul 2014
It was Es Que Love that produced the goods to secure success in the 2014 Lennox Stakes. Settled in a perfect spot in a stalking third early racing under cover, Es Que Love was full of run as Toormore was committed on the front end by Richard Hughes approaching the quarter pole. Unleashed by Adam Kirby at the furlong marker, he swamped the favourite with just over 100 yards to race. “They didn’t feel to me that they went very quick, as he’s travelled very strong and come there on the bridle,” his jockey explained. “We learnt quite a lot about him last time – we thought we’d play it a bit later and he’s done it easily.” Cox added, “He’s a real yard favourite at home since he joined us and that’s how he works in the mornings at home. There was no pace in the Hackwood last time, where Adam took a calculated decision taking it up two out and he didn’t quite last home. He’s got a high cruising speed and can really change gear when he needs to. This was a step up in performance, so we’ll enjoy today before making plans. He’s well entered up in the G2 Hungerford (at Newbury on Aug. 16) and G2 Park Stakes (at Doncaster on September 13th) so we’ll take that decision in a couple of day’s time.” Cox said his racing wish list had long included winning the Lennox – Glorious Goodwood’s day 1 feature, “this is one of my favourite races and one I have always strived to win.”
So far this year, Es Que Love has ran second in the G3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket on Apr. 17 and third in May in the G2 Duke of York Stakes when switched back to six furlongs and was put forward for both big sprints at the latest edition of the Royal meeting. Subsequently he filled third spot in the Hackwood Stakes again over six at Newbury just 10 days ago.
Es Que Love’s 110,000gns purchase at the 2013 autumn horses in training sale represented coming full circle for the Es Que Love partnership of Rathasker Stud owner Maurice Burns, who collected the prize with wife Theresa and daughter Madeline Burns. His Naas stud has consigned Es Que Love four years ago when the yearling was snapped up by Johnson for 22,000gns, but the re-buy now looks good business. “We couldn’t be more delighted as we have his mum at home and stand his sire Clodovil,” said Burns.
The day belonged to a grafter of a horse and a hard working team in Cox and Kirby, who continue to go quietly about their Group-winning business.
