Lumiere shines in G1 Cheveley. Rathasker sells her half brother by Exceed and Excel in Book 1
27 Sep 2015
LUMIERE digged in deep to land the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. She confirmed the promise of her maiden win on the July course and her second in the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes last month. The grey speed ball of a filly bounced out of the stalls to lead her rivals from the outset and, having plenty in the final furlong to repel Illuminate and reverse the Lowther form with Besharah.
Mark Johnson said, “I haven’t been as nervous ahead of a race and I think she is the best I’ve had a in a long time. She is was the biggest, tallest and rangiest filly in the line-up and she’s got so much speed. William Buick told me after the York defeat that she was a proper six-furlong horse, but I’ve already told the owners that she will win the Guineas. The Breeders’ Cup has been mentioned, but not really discussed in any detail, so we’ll have to wait and see."
Lumiere is the fourth foal out of the ten-year-old mare Screen Star. She herself was very gifted, recording a remarkable Timeform rating of 110p. The daughter of Tobougg was purchased by Lumiere's trainer Mark Johnston for 52,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2013 when she was in foal to Exceed And Excel.
The resulting colt will be offered through Rathasker Stud at next month's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale – lot 433.
