GREGORIAN CHANT WINS CLOCKER'S CORNER STAKES
25 Jan 2021
Rathasker Stud's Gregorian sealed a first American stakes winner late on Sunday when the similarly-named Gregorian Chant made a rapid move from last to first in the Clocker's Corner at Santa Anita. Gregorian Chant had won in his lone start at two, going seven furlongs on the all-weather surface at Dundalk in Ireland (and was then purchased by Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland for American clients), and placed third in the one-mile Lure Stakes at Santa Anita last October. Today Gregorian Chant broke from the outside and was quickly shuffled back to last after a first quarter in :21.76. Tipped out widest of all after a half in :44.65, he flew to the front down the middle of the course and looked like a practiced sprinter, decimating the field by 2 1/4 lengths in a hand ride. “I gotta give Nick Cosato [of Slam Dunk Racing] a lot of credit. He thought of this after his last race,” trainer Phil d’Amato said of the decision to cut Gregorian Chant back. “Just remembering what a big turn of foot he had from when we bought him, we thought it was worth a try. Juan [Hernandez] fits this horse really well. Actually his brother, Jonathan, gallops him in the morning, so it’s kind of a little family affair there. Juan has a special touch there with him and gets everything out of him.” Congratulations to his breeders Clarendon Stud.
